The banya hat (Russian: шапка для бани, "hat for the banya") is the tall felt cap you see on every bench of a Russian bathhouse. It looks like a wizard's hat and it does a very serious job: the air at head height in a banya runs 175–210°F, and a thick layer of wool felt keeps your head and hair well below that while the rest of you enjoys the steam.
